Hiiiii! 👋🏼Checking in with ya’ll because it’s RACE WEEK here in my world! I have a feeling some of you will also be in New York this weekend, so I’ll share info on how to watch my race both live and online as well as details on an opportunity to meet up IRL in NYC! 👀 First of all, I want to share some of my thoughts going into this race. As you may already know, I got injured (again) this summer and had to cut my track season short. It took me longer than I thought to get back on my feet and running consistently after that. I’ve been spending a lot of time on my bike (which I love) waiting for my running to feel right again. Basically what I’ve been struggling with is a sense that my stride is off- awkward, uncoordinated, out of synch, without rhythm… and all this makes me feel not good at all and definitely NOT fast. On Oct 1 we drove to our house in Flagstaff, AZ to start a high altitude training block to prepare for the 5k race in New York this weekend. I had only done a couple fartlek workouts before this training camp was to begin, but felt good about a month of training ahead of me. Immediately when I got to Flagstaff everything felt wrong. I spent the first week of my altitude camp down in Scottsdale seeing a couple different PTs trying to get my body moving right again. Then it did get good… for a few days. Then it got bad again… more treatment… then it got better again! And so it goes. I share all of this not to make excuses for myself going into this race. However, I do feel the need to level set everyone’s expectations for my fitness and preparedness for a road 5k right now. I was hoping to be in a position to fight for a podium spot this weekend, but right now I’m honestly feeling proud that I made the decision NOT to drop out of the race and go into this weekend with a sense of gratitude that right now I am HEALTHY and my body is moving well. I have not done enough workouts to realistically fight for that podium spot I wanted earlier this month, but I am actually really excited to be able to test my body in a fun and different way than usual and to do so in one of my absolute favorite places in the world… a city where dreams are made… where anything can happen… and place for the hustlers… NEW YORK CITY BABY! So if you see me out on the course absolutely fighting for my life, please give me some cheers as I know I’ll be in the hurt locker right from the gun!
